Imke Plattel attended the Academy of Art St. Joost and Artez Arnhem from 1982 to 1988, studying monumental and autonomous art.

After her studies she stayed in Italy for extended periods of time, participating in the study of traces of ancient housing in Pompeï. This period of measuring and researching foundations and various methods of stacking stones were to become a lasting influence on her later work.

Back in the Netherlands her work acquired a new layeredness, a layeredness she also recognized and discovered in the living nature during the trips she made to Australia, America and India.

To her, the traces left behind from the past and the formative force of this living nature constitute a new reality.
